行ってみたら、そこは刑務所だった…（2日目日記）
今日は気ままな市内観光。

朝、ホテルでお腹いっぱいに朝食を食べ、すぐ前のバス停から、路線バスに乗り込む。
目指すは、Changi Prison Chapel and Museum（チャンギ刑務所礼拝堂&博物館）。
第二次大戦中、日本軍の捕虜となったイギリス人やオーストラリア人の連合軍兵士の収容所として使われた場所で、皮肉にも終戦後は日本軍の戦犯が収容された。
連合軍の捕虜によって建てられたチャペルが残り、博物館になっている。
シンガポールの路線バスは、英国風ダブルデッカーでとても快適だが、車内で次の停留所を告げるアナウンスが流れない。
窓の外の景色に目を凝らして、降りる場所を探した。
自動車向けの大きな道路標識に、"Changi Prison Complex"と書いてある。
そろそろ近くだろう、と思っていたら、"Changi Prison"というバス停を発見。
降りようと思って外を見ると、大きな建物が沢山並び、高くて立派な塀で囲まれている。
これはもしかして、現在稼動している、ホンモノの刑務所…。
刑務所には用事はない。慌てて降りるのをやめたら、博物館はその2つ先の停留所だった。
当時捕虜を収容していた施設は、現在の刑務所の一部になっている。
このチャペルも、刑務所の中から移設して、博物館にしたらしい。
博物館の展示は、一方的に日本兵の悪事を並び立てるものだったが、日本では見られないものが多数あり、興味深かった。
展示について説明が入ったオーディオガイドを借りることが出来るが、日本語版はない。
受付のおばちゃんが、「日本語版が欲しいって人が多いから、作るといいんだけど～」と笑いながら言っていたが、まあ無理だろう。
英語版を借りて聞いたが、あの内容をあのまま日本語にして配るなんて、ちょっと考えられない。
そのな博物館だが、チャペルには日本の学校から修学旅行で来た生徒たちの千羽鶴があり、"Tsuru"と言う説明もされていた。

帰り道、バスを待つついでに、バス停2つ分歩き、現代のCangi Prisonも塀の外から見学。
刑務所なのに、キャッチコピーまである。

お昼には、牧さんに勧めてもらった中華街にあるフードモールでチキンライスを食べ、その後はモノレールに乗ってセントレーナ島へ。
観光のため、ウォーターフロントの再開発が進んでいる。
東京でいうところのお台場、サンフランシスコでいうところのピア。
セントレーナ島のマーライオンは、中に入って上まで登ることが出来る。
港湾都市を一望。世界一のハブ港。

後は、シティホールに戻り、ラッフルズの銅像を眺めたり、川舟に乗ったりしていたら、すぐに夜が来た。
時間が足りない。

ショッピングモールをぐるっと一周し、まったくお土産になるものがないことに愕然としつつ、中で食事をしてタクシーでホテルへ戻る。
明日は朝一番で空港へ行かなくてはいけない。空港があるのもチャンギ。
今度から、SINに降り立つたびに、あの刑務所を思い出しそうだ。

Every time I read from this blog site I learned something new, but the comments here make me think differently at times.
I really don't understand why some people feel the need to be so argumentative.
