東海岸紀行 -ボストン・NY-
少し遅くなりましたが、東海岸旅行の写真&ジャーナル。
この旅行、日本-アメリカの往復は弟とともにし、現地では僕がボストン・弟がセント・ルイスを観光した。ちなみに弟の方は、このためにわざわざSt.Louisまで行ったらしい。
いい街だったようだが、こんな田舎、自分は一生行かないかもしれない。
≪Boston≫
大雨のシカゴから到着したボストンは、快晴だった。Mid-westとは大分天気が違うらしい。
それでも、かなり肌寒い。日差しは暖かいが、日陰に入ると半袖ではかなり寒く感じる。
だというのに、面白そうだったから湖上を走るボートで空港からダウンタウンへ移動してみる。ボストンならではの交通手段。
ダウンタウンの湖畔の公園で、ジャズを演奏している人がいて、市民がそれを聞きつつ思い思いに勝手に過ごしていた。アメリカの日曜日の午後だなー。日本からの7000マイルの空間移動が、実感となった瞬間。
ボストンの夜はユースホステル。なかなか立派だった。
ボストンは、街自体は狭い。今回も、ユースからダウンタウンまで地下鉄で移動し、後はひたすら徒歩でまわった。
日差しがまぶしくて気持ちが良い。まだ店が開いていない朝早くから、Seattle's Best Coffeeで買ったコーヒーを片手にブラブラと散歩した。のんびり出来る、よい街だ。
久々に味わう開放感だった。
ボストンの観光地を結ぶ"Freedom Trail"は、合計約2.4km。午前だけでは、さすがに完歩は出来なかった。米国建国の歴史を語るボストンの重要ポイントを、写真を撮りながらどんどんまわった。
午後は、Boston University(BU)に留学中のSFC同期（かの『戦日』グルワ仲間w）のところに遊びに行って、学生のふりをして大学の中を歩いてみた。Gパンにパーカーは、日本の学生よりもはるかに軽装。いいな、大学生。うらやましい。
サントリー学芸賞を受賞した『アフター・アメリカ』の中で、渡辺靖先生が取材していた、ビーコン・ヒル。2年くらい前に本を読んだことを思い出して、ブラブラお散歩。
ビーコン・ヒルでは、セブンイレブンもこうなる（右）。日本でもこれくらいお洒落に作ればよいのに…（>IYグループ鈴木氏さん）。
#読んでるわけない。
『アフター・アメリカ』に感動し、道を踏み外して渡辺研に入ってしまったのは、もう1年半前の話。どう考えても脈絡がない二つの研究会を掛け持ちし、爆発した。
それでも、あの逸脱は学生時代最高の逸脱。すごい刺激になった。こうしてボストンにやってきたのも、あの本に出会ったから。
ボストン3日目、マサチューセッツ大学の中にある、J.F.K.博物館。
世論調査で、合衆国史上最も偉大な大統領はJ.F.K.だという結果もあるらしい。暗殺された英雄はいつまでも惜しまれれ、勝手にされたのだろうか。本人はどう思っているだろう。
暗殺につきまとう陰謀説は、これからも米国政治史の謎であり続ける。
ハーバード大学見学。大学のカフェテリアで食べるピザは、こんな感じでダイナミックだった。絶対太る、アメリカの生活。
右は、國領先生の母校、ハーバード・ビジネススクール。
アメリカ格安航空会社の目玉、jet BlueのBoston-NYはインターネット購入で60ドル。
その成長は、かつての目玉Southwestをはるかにしのぐ。
ちなみに、機中は本革シートで、CS放送が無料で視聴出来る。
≪New York≫
テロから5年後のN.Y.。9-11から、2日後のN.Y.。
WTCの跡地となったグラウンド・ゼロには、まだたくさんの花が残っていた。
僕が初めて訪れたのは7年前。WTCに登った。
その2年後、9-11。
さらに5年。N.Y.は、変わらずに世界中の人々を惹きつけてきた。
それだけの包容力があるのだろう。見方を変えれば、大きすぎる。
自分を含めた大方の観光客は、色鮮やかななブロードウェイに感動して帰るだけだが、地下鉄に一度乗れば、マンハッタンを一歩出れば、N.Y.に住んでいる人が、必ずしもウォールストリートやブロードウェイに縁があるような人だけではないことが分かる。
どんな人をも包み込んでしまう街、そして、どんな人も名前のないただの人に還元してしまう街、しれがNew Yorkだ。どんな有名人も、マンハッタンでは振り向いてもらえないらしい。それくらい、でかい。
テロに遭ったのも、決して絵に描いたような、華やかなニューヨーカーだけではない。
ただ、その全てが、本当は名前を持った一人一人の人間だった。犠牲になった人の名前が、妙な存在感を持ってボードに刻まれている。
天気に恵まれなかったN.Y.では、メトロポリタン・ミュージアムでモネの作品に見入り、閉館時間を過ぎて警備員に強制退去させられるまで粘った。
実はN.Y.は雨が多い。だからこれもまた偽らざるN.Y.だ。
